Hansel and Gretel Re-do...
Happy Monday to you! After having a portfolio critique with Adam Rex, I decided to re-do a couple of my portfolio pieces, starting with Hansel and Gretel. I used the same basic composition, but wanted to try to create a stronger sense of light. Adam suggested that maybe Hansel and Gretel should be in the dark of the forest, about to step out into the sunshine. I also wanted to change the characters to make their poses less stiff.
The original piece is above. Below are the steps I took to get to the new illustration (not including a few thumbnails and the pencil drawing) as well as the finished image:
And here's the final image. Pen and ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and a wee bit of tweaking in photoshop.
So that's what I worked on last week. This week I'll be finishing up my "Ocean Voyage" illustration for the group blog. If you haven't visited Between the End Pages yet, please stop by and say hello!

This is wonderful, Brooke! And the new version is so much better then your first attempt with a much stronger sense of light and overall mood. It also seems a lot more detailed and I love the twirl in the treetops! Great work!
ReplyDeleteVery successful!! Great!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I thought the original was good but the redo is even better! Thanks for posting the process shots. It's interesting to see how you created the new image. Beautiful work.
ReplyDeleteOh how gorgeous :) Both are nice, but there's a noticable improvement in the final picture. You remind me of my mum- she's always going back to her old paintings and improving them- I guess that's just a natural process for an artist!
ReplyDeleteSo nice! Like all the details.
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE WONDERFUL. So fantastic in fact that I am shouting. Hmm. Super glad you followed me on Twitter, because I am delighted to visit your sites. You are so creative and I love your fun images. I was wondering... who did your website? Did you do it? I need to revamp... badly. So I was just wondering.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, yay for you, and art, and stuff.
how cool is this?
ReplyDeleteAnd I do like seeing your art on Between the End Pages!
;)
Awesome! Love the detail and the tree leaves especially. :) Really successful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! It's amazing how much of a difference the lighting makes, and I love the new leaves as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great comments everyone! :)
